Ecological Flows

Ecological flows (which are also called environmental flows or e-flows) refer to the quantity, quality, and timing of river flows necessary to maintain healthy ecosystems and support a variety of human activities. One commonly used phrase to describe ecological flows is “water for people and for nature”. Myths are sometimes broadcasted about ecological flows, such as one stating that e-flows are water wasted on bugs and fish, or one stating that e-flows are meant to keep rivers in their original natural state. That is not the case: ecological flows are estimated in a way that balances sustainable use of water with the protection of river ecosystems.
