Ecohydrology is a hybrid science that combines hydrology—water science—and ecology—ecosystem science. It not only focuses on how the storage and movement of water affect ecosystems, but also how plant and animal dynamics affect water. Some of the origins of ecohydrology can be traced back to the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO notably advocates that better understanding hydrology-ecology interactions is key to tackling sustainable development goals related to water security and biodiversity.
