A watershed is an area of land that collects rainfall water and snowmelt water and directs that water to a single point located on a river, lake, or wetland. The shape and boundaries of a watershed are mainly determined by topography. Watersheds are often compared to bathtubs: their shape directs the water they receive to a single, lower-elevation outflow point (called the outlet), just like the drain of a bathtub.
