Hydrometric Station

A hydrometric station is a permanent installation where scientific instruments are used to measure streamflow at one particular point along a stream or a river. Depending on the station, streamflow data can be recorded once every 15 minutes, once every hour, or once a day. In Quebec, hundreds of hydrometric stations are overseen by the Centre d’Expertise Hydrique du Québec (CEHQ). In the rest of Canada, streamflow data from thousands of hydrometric stations is made available to the public by the Water Survey of Canada, which is a branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada.
