The word tributary is used to refer to a stream or river that flows into a larger stream, river or lake. In other words, a tributary (which is also called an affluent) feeds water into a bigger water body. The area where the tributary joins a larger stream or river is called a confluence. The confluence of rivers that carry waters with very different chemical properties can lead to spectacular scenery.
